Frogs!

Elliot had his heart set on catching tadpoles this spring. We lucked out when we stubbled upon a defunct pond full of them while seeing a home with our realtor. Mommy scooped about 20 tadpole out of the pond into a coffee cup and brought them home. We made a habitat in a plastic tub and filled it with water and plants from a nearby creek - where we caught more tadpoles! We kept the tub outside and let rain water "refresh" it.

Elliot checked on his tadpoles nearly every day! We read a lot about tadpoles and how to take care of them. To our delight and amazement, the tadpoles thrived and slowly turned into teeny tiny frogs.

In August we decided it was time to release our little frogs. I know this was a tough decision for Elliot. He really wanted to keep his frogs. He finally agreed the frogs would be happiest in the woods near our house.

Raising the little frogs was a great learning opportunity for both kids. Beatrice wasn't as interested in them, but was very proud to tell her teacher and friends that Elliot had "pet frogs".

I'm sure you told Elliot about when we were kids and would catch tadpoles in Langley Oaks. Your budding scientist :)
